Hayseed Lip Balm

Hayseed is our classic UNFLAVORED LIP BALM made with the goodness of Highwood Crossing’s certified organic, non-GMO, cold pressed canola oil.  This is the base formula for all our flavored lip balms too (i.e. hayseed formula with a little essential oil and or booze added in for good measure).

Anyhow, this natural flavor has a very subtle “straw-like” scent. So, we’ve aptly named it Hayseed Lip Balm to recognize this. Plus, to give a nod to our fellow prairie flat-landers.

Lowen’s Lip Balm Lore

The story behind Lowen’s Lip Balms can be found in a failed experiment.  In the early days, when trying to create a natural, effective and locally sourced diaper balm for our daughter Lowen. I accidentally came up with this lip balm formula.

You see, after a boat load of failed formulations. Finally, I had created an amazing diaper balm!

Not so…when my wife applied it to her hand and placed it under the tap. Clearly, it didn’t do a great job repelling the water.  It actually “took on” water, which isn’t desirable when you are trying to protect baby’s bottom from diaper nastiness.

Later that same night after finishing up a late feeding with Lowen, my wife’s lips were really bothering her. Being half-asleep and not wanting to search in the dark for “lip chap”. She repurposed my failed formula. That happened to be sitting by the change table, as a lip balm.

In the morning, I learned by accident, I had created “the most amazing lip balms she’d tried!”  Once I finally perfected our Butter Balm, I revisited this formula and actually flavored it with some peppermint oil to make “Candy Cane” lip balms for our holiday open house.  They turned out to be very popular and from that point on our expanding line of naturally flavored lip balms was born!

• Our lip balm’s performance will vary in extreme heat. If storage temperatures exceed 40°C or 104°F your lip balm will soften and sweat out the oil components. Higher temperatures will cause the contents to liquefy. For the best results, please leave your lip balm in a cool place!
