Funky Cold Camelina Lip Balm

Funky Cold Camelina Lip Balm (formerly Cool Camelina) was our first unflavoured lip balm. Made with the goodness of Three Farmer’s Camelina Oil.  Not familiar? Camelina is an “ancient” grain (AKA – Gold of Pleasure.) Used as an oilseed in Europe in the oldtimey days.  Now, it’s making a resurgence in Saskatchewan. Just an hour south, from where I grew-up no less!  Camelina oil is non-GMO. Plus, grown, harvested and pressed in southern Saskatchewan by family run Canpressco Products Inc. (AKA Three Farmer’s)

Why use Camelina?

First came upon camelina oil watching a Dragon’s Den segments on CBC.  My aim was to “pitch” at the open call for entrepreneurs and was watching past aired segments when I came upon Elysia and Natasha pitching to the Dragon’s about their incredible oil.  I was sold and thought that it would be a great ingredient in cosmetics.  What is great about camelina oil is that it is very stable to high (and low, as in freezing) temperatures and is abundant in unsaturated fatty acids (see essential fatty acids).  So, it’s great for your lips and the rest of your skin. Clearly, why we use it in so many of our products!

Lowen’s Lip Balm Lore

The story behind Lowen’s Lip Balms can be found in a failed experiment.  In the early days, when trying to create a natural, effective and locally sourced diaper balm for our daughter Lowen. I accidentally came up with this lip balm formula.

You see, after a boat load of failed formulations. Finally, I had created an amazing diaper balm!

Not so…when my wife applied it to her hand and placed it under the tap. Clearly, it didn’t do a great job repelling the water.  It actually “took on” water, which isn’t desirable when you are trying to protect baby’s bottom from diaper nastiness.

Later that same night after finishing up a late feeding with Lowen, my wife’s lips were really bothering her. Being half-asleep and not wanting to search in the dark for “lip chap”. She repurposed my failed formula. That happened to be sitting by the change table, as a lip balm.

In the morning. I learned by accident. I had created “the most amazing lip balms she’d tried!”  Once I finally perfected our Butter Balm, I revisited this formula and actually flavoured it with some peppermint oil to make “Candy Cane” lip balms for our holiday open house.  They turned out to be very popular and from that point on our expanding line of naturally flavoured lip balms was born!

• As always: Cruelty Free (we only test on willing humans)
• Our lip balm’s performance will vary in extreme heat. If storage temperatures exceed 40°C or 104°F your lip balm will soften and sweat out the oil components. Higher temperatures will cause the contents to liquefy. For the best results, please leave your lip balm in a cool place!
